Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD)
Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) scan is a painless, non-invasive test that assesses an individual’s likelihood of experiencing a bone fracture and aids in the identification of osteoporosis.
Before, during and after your scan
All BMD tests services are delivered by our partner laboratory, situated within the same building as our health screening centre. BMD tests are straightforward, quick, and painless, requiring virtually no preparation. Here’s what to know at each stage.
Before
- BMD tests are straightforward, quick, and painless, requiring virtually no preparation.
- Inform us if you've recently had a barium exam or received contrast material for a CT scan or nuclear medicine test, as these materials may affect your bone density test.
- Refrain from taking calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before the test.
- Remove jewellery and metal objects.
- Notify the staff if you have any metallic implants in your spine or hip.
- Female patients should inform the staff if they are pregnant or suspect they might be.
During
- You will lie on a padded examination couch with your ankles secured to a positioning device.
- A mechanical arm will pass over your body during the scan.
- You will not feel anything during the scan, and the radiation exposure is minimal.
- The scan typically lasts 10 to 15 minutes.
After
- You may resume normal activities.
